Best Laid Plans
Feb. 27th, 2010 05:25 pmThe Seed Swap wasn't officially canceled, but winter weather is moving through, there are various snow emergencies in effect, and conditions looked unpredictable for the morning and afternoon ("possible periods of freezing rain") so between those things and our household's history with mid-February to early March car accidents... well, it seemed prudent to stay home rather than make the trek about half an hour up the road. *sigh* This did give me an excuse a reason to make a final spring order of seeds, though, and I put through Seed Savers Exchange for two more cherry tomatoes (Velvet Red, Tommy Toe) and one more paste tomato (Opalka) along with a couple of flowers (Sky and Ice daisies and the daisy-like Ballade Mix). I figure that they should make it here in about a week, which will be just right for when I want to start tomatoes. It certainly wouldn't hurt if I ended up starting them a little later, it just makes me happy to start all of them together.
We have had a good bit of snow this past few days (relative to the snowfall amounts we've had this winter, anyway), so today's soundtrack is snowmobiles going past and occasionally detouring to get a run through the field next to us. A bit of a juxtaposition considering I'm planning on starting impatiens, sage, and oregano tomorrow! On the other hand, it's supposed to be above freezing for the better part (if not all) of next week, so this may well be their last chance at playing in the snow for this winter. I'll definitely take mid-30's for traipsing out to the shed.
I have already cleaned off my gardening bench and I opened the bag of BM1 and decanted some into an empty trash can for accessibility. I don't think I said before, but it's a 3.8 cubic foot compressed bale. Even knowing that though, I was amused when less than half of it filled up the large trash can. Once it gets out of that compression, it's quite fluffy and perfectly suitable for using as a seed starter. Now if only I had somewhere to put those seed trays... Granted, D's supposed to be addressing that issue today (there was something about building something), but my original plan is still available as a fall back option. Or, ya know, just sitting them on the desk like last year for the time being - I'm not starting that many impatiens, sage, and oregano plants.
