CAMERAAAAA!! Also, Pears
Oct. 10th, 2010 07:04 pmI haz a camera! Guess what I was doing at sunrise this morning? Also, yes, there are too many pictures behind the cut. Sorry?

This overgrown mess is, technically, the garden.

A few pumpkins are still ripening.

The leeks are still hanging out in the garden.

Oh look, more tomatoes.

Most are rotting on the vine almost as soon as (or before) they're ripe.

The sunflowers are all dressed for Halloween. They're all going as Ichabod Crane.

Sunflower heads drying off so the seeds can be harvested. The greenhouse turns out the be fantastic for drying purposes - plenty of air flow with protection from rain and rodents.

The second set of dry beans still in need of pulling from the vine and threshing.

The greenhouse is also perfect for temporary ripe pumpkin storage. The pumpkin that I roasted and turned into (12 and a half cups of) puree the other day was smaller than the one in the center.

Jar storage! I came into some more jars recently (via an auction, plus a few dozen that I've bought thanks to coupons a neighbor passed on to me) and they were piling up in the living room now that the nights are cooling down and I didn't want to leave them outside under the overhang anymore. Fortunately, D finally made it back to the shed project and set up these cabinets in the back of the new shed, along with another one for spare cooking equipment (i.e. the three pressure canners, meat grinder, etc.). It's very dark back there, so this was the best I could do for a photo at the moment.
There are still jars in the upper part of the other shed to come down and be moved over, and of course a lot are currently in use. The blue jars on the upper shelf in the far right cabinet are actually earmarked for sale since they can usually fetch a price that is at least double what a new jar would run (50 cents versus $1-$3 for a blue jar).

Meanwhile, back inside, Jack senses he's being left. Don't feel too sorry for him - he was out chasing bunnies from 4am to 5am, then in for breakfast and a piece of hot dog before going back to bed.

It was pear picking day - free fruit!

The tree is loaded with fruit at all stages of ripeness. We may pick more in a week.

It seemed like there was almost as many windfall fruit as on the tree.

We came home with 2 baskets and 2 milk crates full.

And by assisting, I mean eating them.

I could have chipperly made off with this little girl! She'd come out to play with the big kids and found a scrap of pear that was just her size. Then she had to go back inside because it was time for her very first bath. I was cooing over her like other girls do over babies. D was laughing at me.
No pictures of River! She was still under the covers this morning and things were too busy to pin her down before I went to bed around noon. She'll be nice and clean for pictures tomorrow, though, since both of the two hellions managed to find something verrrry skunky to roll in when they went out last night. Needless to say, both had emergency baths.
(Jack: "I DON'T WANNA BATH!!"
Blue: "YOU BROUGHT THIS ON YOURSELF."
Jack: "I SMELL FINE! AND MY FACE DOESN'T NEED WASHED!"
Blue: "DO YOU WANT TO SLEEP IN THE PEN?!"
Jack: "...My eyes itch."
Blue: "You've got more enthusiasm than sense, buddy.")
