bluesgarden: (NF :: Seedlings)
[personal profile] bluesgarden
It has been a day. On the bright side, some things were crossed off the ToDo list, including starting the cucumbers (2) and the sunflowers (252... no, not a typo), making a couple of doctor appointments, boiling and mashing 5 pounds of sweet potatoes to add to the pups' food, and various other items. Now if this headache would just die, I'd be doing a lot better!

The mystery of the early germinating Chocolate pepper is solved!
It isn't a pepper at all. There was apparently a stray tomato seed
in with my packet of pepper seeds.

*snip*

(It had to go - the pepper seedlings couldn't compete with it and
it really could have been any tomato. I have enough growing and
I wasn't quite that curious.)

Outside in the greenhouse, things are growing sloooowly.

The outer skins of the radishes have all split for reasons
I can't determine but are otherwise doing fine.

The leeks and onions are liking their new digs!

And I was actually able to thin the Mei Qing Choi once (the thinnings went on a salad).

Meanwhile, across the aisle, it looks like I've started an art project, but no!
Long story short: I have a lot of plain, cardboard-type egg cartons.
Which (theoretically) happen to make a great substitute for peat pots.

See? I'll just pour water in the bottom and they'll wick it up as needed.
When the time comes, I'll tear/cut them apart and plant them, carton and all.

NOTE: When using this method, make sure none of your bottom flats have holes.
Or even one hole that will leak out the 8 cups of water you just poured into it.
Ahem. Not that I learned this the hard way this afternoon or anything.

252 sunflowers later... These would be the ones going around the pup's pen,
except for the Mongolian Giants which need larger starting pots.
Those seeds are actually taller than the depth of a section of the egg carton.
(In this case there is actually only 1 seed per cell. I'm not too worried about
the strongest sunflower or whatnot. There'll be some empty cells from a seed here
or there that doesn't germinate.)

All those trays in the previous picture are tucked onto the middle shelf as
the bottom shelf is full of green things. <3
